Saviors of Rhillau
With a permanent population of roughly 1000 people, Rhillau is one of the largest human settlements in Koeh. Rhillau sits very close to the border of elven lands and its location serves to make it a hub for trade and a common pit stop for adventurers and traders traveling between human and elven lands. Most of the city’s economy comes from these travelers and traders, supplemented with game hunted from the vast forest that surrounds the town.
Due to its physical separation from other human settlements, Rhillau is not part of any larger tuath, as is mostly left to handle its own affairs. In times of past need, the elves (whose towns are actually closer than the nearest human settlements) have proven to be of swifter and more capable assistance than other human tuaths. Thankfully, Rhillau maintains very good relations with the elven leadership in the region.
The town is no utopia, however. In addition to many sorts of game, the forests surrounding Rhillau also play home to a rather vicious tribe of orcs. For the most part, the reinforced walls and stalwart guards prevent the orcs from making a run on the town itself, though hunters and trappers must take care when going about their livelihood to avoid orc hunting and raiding parties. Travelers must also take care, though those with enough wealth to be stolen are typically well guarded enough to repel most attacks. There is also a small mountain range, nearby, that is of some import and danger, as it houses a clan of kobolds. Though the tiny lizards keep to themselves, they are fiercely territorial of their home and will attack any who come too close.
The kobolds have good reason to love their home. The mountain is actually a dormant volcano, and once played home to a creature that the kobolds venerate. Some of the older denizens of Rhillau remember that monster. Fifty years ago, a young red dragon took up residence in the dead volcano and began raiding Rhillau and the local trade route, ostensibly to begin building its hoard. It did not take long for a group of elven heroes to come to the town’s aid, however, and slay the dread beast. The head of the dragon was hung in the central tavern, until a year later when it burned down. A new tavern was built on its foundations, styled with wooden dragon’s heads throughout.
In spite of its problems, though, Rhillau continues to prosper. With a varied population, offering a stable economy and a safe rest stop on the long road, Rhillau is a wonderful place to call home.
